HeartCorps member collaborates with Anamosa organizations to reduce food insecurity

ANAMOSA, August 15, 2025 — In a step toward addressing food insecurity in rural Iowa, the American Heart Association, devoted to a world of healthier lives for all, in collaboration with HeartCorps member and other community organizations, have launched several small outdoor food pantries across Jones County.

The food pantries will increase access to healthier food options in rural Iowa and help reduce areas where residents have limited access to affordable and nutritious food, often due to the absence of nearby grocery stores or transportation barriers. Many towns in rural Iowa fall into this category, leaving families with few options beyond convenience stores or fast food.

“While food pantries and assistance programs help those in financial need, many others still struggle to maintain a healthy diet due to logistical challenges,” said Lisa Heitz a HeartCorps member coordinating the project. “These outdoor pantries aim to bridge that gap by offering a convenient, community-supported solution.”

Small outdoor food pantries were installed at the Martelle Public Library, Stanwood Public Library, and Fairfax Public Library. The pantries operate on a simple yet powerful principle: “Take what you need, leave what you can.” Inspired by the concept of little free libraries, these pantries are designed to support individuals and families facing short-term or long-term food challenges.

Plans are already underway to expand the initiative with four additional pantries to be placed at Wregie Memorial Library, Clarence Public Library, Zion Lutheran Church in Wyoming and Lutheran Church in Olin.

Pantries are open to everyone, not just those who qualify for food assistance programs. Whether someone is experiencing a temporary setback or simply needs a little extra help, the pantries offer a discreet and dignified way to access essential food items.

Community members are encouraged to contribute. Even a small donation can help keep these pantries stocked and make a meaningful difference in someone’s life.

Suggested healthier donation options include:

  • Canned Vegetables (low-sodium or no added sodium)
  • Canned Fruits (in 100% juice)
  • Whole Grain Items (pasta, rice, and unsweetened cereals)
  • Tuna (low-sodium, plain tuna in water)
  • Chicken (low-sodium)
  • Low-Sodium Soups
  • Oatmeal (steel cut or old-fashioned oats)
  • Dry or Canned Beans (low-sodium)
  • Healthy Snacks (whole grain crackers or light popcorn)

The food pantry project is sponsored locally by Marion Trail Life 007 Troop, ReVosWel, Sherwin-Williams, and Energy Mfg., who donated their time, materials, and expertise to bring the project to life.
