Wear Red for Women’s Heart Health on National Wear Red Day®
OAKLAND, Calif., February 5, 2025 – National Wear Red Day is Friday, Feb. 7, when people and landmarks across the U.S. will “Go Red” once again to raise awareness around women’s heart health as part of the American Heart Association’s American Heart Month celebration.
Cities throughout the San Francisco Bay Area will be showing their support, from San Jose, which will illuminate its iconic City Hall rotunda in red, to San Carlos, Redwood City and Walnut Creek, which will present an American Heart Month proclamation at each of their February City Council Meetings.
“As a cardiologist, mother and emcee of this year’s Go Red for Women Bay Area luncheon, I’m especially excited to ‘Go Red’ to help inspire women of all ages to take charge of their heart health,” said Rita Ng, MD, board member for the American Heart Association Greater Bay Area and Physician-in-Chief for the Permanente Medical Group. “I’m proud to help lead this movement to combat the No. 1 killer of women. Together, we can ensure every woman has equal opportunities to live longer, healthier lives.”
According to the American Heart Association’s 2025 Heart Disease and Stroke Statistical Update, cardiovascular disease remains the greatest health threat for women.
Nearly 45% of women over age 20 are living with some form of cardiovascular disease. CVD is also the leading cause of maternal death in the U.S.
Greater Bay Area communities can rally around National Wear Red Day and the Go Red for Women movement in many ways:
- Wear red and tag the American Heart Association on social media: @ahanorthernca #WearRedDay, #WearRedAndGive and #GoRedforWomen
- Learn Hands-Only CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) so more women get the life-saving help they need in an emergency.
- Join Research Goes Red to ensure women are represented in cardiovascular research.
- Prioritize heart health by making and keeping doctor appointments, inviting a friend to work out, or taking a quiet moment alone to de-stress.
- Donate to the American Heart Association at stores throughout Feb.
- The Big Lots Foundation, a National Go Red for Women supporter, is matching donations (up to $500,000 total) made on heart.org and goredforwomen.org.
- CVS Health will offer customers an opportunity to give at the register in addition to supporting year-round research, education and access to care that improves women’s cardiovascular health, including initiatives that address maternal heart health and reducing hypertension rates.
The American Heart Association’s Go Red for Women is locally sponsored in the Greater Bay Area by Chevron, Cisco, UCSF Health and Visa Foundation. For more information about the Bay Area Go Red for Women movement, email Katherine.Duarte@heart.org or visit 2024-2025 Bay Area Go Red for Women.

About Go Red for Women®
The American Heart Association’s signature initiative, Go Red for Women®, is a comprehensive platform designed to increase women’s heart health awareness and serve as a catalyst for change to improve the lives of women globally. While the majority of cardiac events can be prevented, cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in women, claiming the lives of 1 in 3 women. For more than two decades, Go Red for Women has encouraged awareness. The movement harnesses the energy, passion and power of women to band together and collectively wipe out heart disease. It challenges them to know their risk for heart disease and take action to reduce their personal risk. It also gives them tools they need to lead a heart-healthy life. The Go Red for Women movement is nationally sponsored by CVS Health, with additional support from national cause supporters. For more information, please visit GoRedforWomen.org.
