Journalists must meet the following criteria to apply for one or both options of embargoed access listed below:

  • News media reporters, writers, producers and editors with staff credentials from newspapers, magazines, online news services, wire services, radio or television networks, individual stations and blogs that appear on a media outlet's website that produce daily or weekly original (breaking) health/medical/science news.
  • Journalists with bylined, original news stories published on news wire services and news media who produce non-breaking, original news materials for bi-monthly, monthly, or quarterly publications or programs will be considered on a case-by-case basis. Stories should be original news stories, not article summaries or re-posting of the abstract or manuscript (copyrighted).
  • Freelance writers with approved credentials (must provide three bylined original news articles/clip links (not article summaries) published by accredited media outlets within the past 6 months) and/or a verifiable assignment letter from an accredited media outlet. Letters of assignment must include contact information for the assigning editor at the media outlet. Note: access may be limited to the time of the specific freelance assignment.
  • Applications from writers/editors or contributors for websites not considered mainstream media outlets that report regularly on breaking health news will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
  • American Heart Association news media materials may not be used to develop Continuing Medical Education (CME) materials or educational content.
  • Journalists with embargoed access are prohibited from sharing any materials under embargo with anyone for any purpose other than original news reporting. American Heart Association news materials may not be repackaged or republished for any purposes.

Please note: Access to American Heart Association embargoed media materials and/or the embargoed newsroom is limited to a restricted group of journalists as determined by the Heart Association’s Communications team. You will be asked periodically to renew your embargo agreement and update your credentials. Journalists will be automatically removed from access as determined by the American Heart Association Communications team, based on usage and coverage, and you will be required to reapply for embargoed access.
