BEAUFORT, S.C., Feb. 6, 2025— The American Heart Association, a global force for longer, healthier lives for all, announces a new initiative with the Beaufort County Library system. High blood pressure, also called hypertension, is a leading risk factor for cardiovascular disease in South Carolina and the two organizations are working together to address this issue.
Blood pressure kits are now available for check-out at all Beaufort County Library locations, including the two bookmobiles. The kits contain a validated blood pressure device, instructions on how to take your blood pressure, how to interpret a reading, and additional resources, including health centers, to help patrons best manage their blood pressure.
Ansley Howze, executive director of the American Heart Association, Southern Coast emphasized the importance of this program, “Nearly half of American adults have high blood pressure, often without realizing it. By providing these resources through the library, we’re helping Beaufort County residents become more aware of their blood pressure levels and reduce the risk factors associated with stroke and heart disease.”
According to the South Carolina Department for Public Health about 1 in 3 South Carolinians have been told by a doctor they have hypertension. Thousands more have it and don’t know it. High blood pressure is often referred to as a “silent killer” because it may not present any symptoms. It’s important to regularly check your blood pressure and know your numbers. Untreated high blood pressure can cause heart attack, stroke, and other health threats.
“We are excited to work with the American Heart Association to offer blood pressure kits to our patrons, said Amanda Brewer Dickman, library director of the Beaufort County Library System. “This is a much-needed resource for residents of Beaufort County and we are eager to empower individuals to take control of their health and prevent the long-term risks associated with high blood pressure. This initiative will help us promote a healthier community.”
