SAVANNAH, GA, Oct. 28, 2025— The American Heart Association, a relentless force changing the future of health for everyone, everywhere, announces a new initiative with Live Oak Public Libraries. High blood pressure also called hypertension, is a leading risk factor for cardiovascular disease in Georgia and the two organizations are working together to address this issue.
Blood pressure kits are now available for check-out at five Live Oak Public Libraries, across three counties. Locations include:
- Bull Street Library (Chatham County)
- Oglethorpe Mall Library (Chatham County)
- Southwest Chatham Library (Chatham County)
- Springfield Library (Effingham County)
- Hinesville Library (Liberty County)
The kits contain a validated blood pressure device, instructions on how to take your blood pressure, how to interpret a reading, and additional resources, including health centers, to help patrons best manage their blood pressure.
Ansley Howze, executive director of the American Heart Association, Southern Coast emphasized the importance of this program, “High blood pressure is a leading, controllable risk factor for heart disease and stroke. By providing these resources through the library system, we’re helping residents become more aware of their blood pressure levels and reduce their risk factors.”
According to the American Heart Association, nearly half of adults in the U.S. have high blood pressure, and many don’t even know it. Of those diagnosed, about 75% don’t have their blood pressure under control. High blood pressure is often referred to as a “silent killer” because it can go undetected until serious health issues arise. It’s important to regularly check your blood pressure and know your numbers. Untreated high blood pressure can cause heart attack, stroke, and other health threats.
“We are excited to work with the American Heart Association to offer blood pressure kits to our patrons,” said Alissa Landram, director of technical services, Live Oak Public Libraries. “These critical resources will help empower individuals to take control of their health and prevent the long-term risks associated with high blood pressure.”
The American Heart Association’s initiative with Live Oak Public Libraries is supported by Raymond James. For more information about high blood pressure, visit www.heart.org/HBP.
