Fort Wayne, IN - July 30, 2025 - A new initiative aimed at saving lives across the region aims to provide employees and community members with the knowledge and confidence to respond effectively during a cardiac emergency.

Through the implementation of Cardiac Emergency Response Plans (CERPs), multiple Goodwill Industries of Northeast Indiana locations have now been equipped with automated external defibrillators (AEDs) and Anywhere CPR Training Kits  thanks to a collaboration with the American Heart Association, a global force for healthier lives for all.

“Every second counts when someone’s heart stops,” said Mindy Hartwick, executive director for the American Heart Association – Fort Wayne. “Immediate CPR and AED use can double or triple a person’s chances of survival. This initiative ensures that more people across Northeast Indiana have the resources to take action when it matters most.”

Why this matters:

  • More than 350,000 cardiac arrests occur outside of hospitals each year in the U.S.
  • Creating prepared and responsive environments increases community resilience.

The collaboration marks a significant step toward building a heart-safe community—one that prioritizes readiness, training, and quick action.

The American Heart Association expresses deep appreciation to the Goodwill team and community partners whose support has made this program possible.
