The American Heart Association, a relentless force changing the future of health for everyone everywhere, issued the following statement in response to the passage of Proposition 310, which ends the sale of flavored tobacco and nicotine products in Denver.
“With the election this week, Denver voters took a bold step to protect youth, support those struggling with nicotine addiction, and improve public health. By voting yes on Proposition 310, residents upheld the city’s restriction on flavored tobacco product sales, protecting the ordinance passed by the Denver City Council last year and preventing the tobacco industry from reversing it.
“This measure helps keep dangerous and addictive products away from youth. Flavored tobacco and nicotine products, including menthol, are designed to hook young people by masking the harshness of tobacco, making it easier to start and harder to quit. These products are a key driver of youth tobacco use and addiction.
“The American Heart Association is proud to stand with a broad coalition of local nonprofits, healthcare leaders, educators, parents, and community advocates who championed Proposition 310. By removing these flavored products from store shelves, Denver joins many Colorado cities leading the way toward a healthier future for all.”
