ERIE, Feb.12, 2026 — For more than a century, the American Heart Association has worked to champion longer, healthier lives and this year, one of Erie’s own is stepping forward to help propel that mission even further. Gurjaipal “Paul” Kang, M.D., a respected cardiologist with UPMC Hamot, known for his deep commitment to patient care, has been named chair of the 2026 Erie Heart Ball, bringing his passion for heart health to one of the region’s most impactful fundraising events.

“It is a profound honor to serve as chair of the American Heart Association Erie Heart Ball this year. My professional work as a cardiologist, proceduralist, researcher, educator and philanthropist aligns perfectly with the Heart Association’s mission to educate, advance research and serve,” said Kang. “Cardiovascular disease is far more than a statistic to me; it has touched both my family and my patients. This role provides a vital opportunity to raise funds for the institutions and research that can spare lives from this deadly disease.”

Dr. Kang joined Medicor Associates, now UPMC Hamot Heart & Vascular Institute, in 2001. He served as director, cardiac catheterization laboratory at UPMC Hamot and Meadville Medical Center for several years. His research has been published and recognized numerous times, and he has won several awards including Chief Fellow, Cardiology, Case Western Reserve University/University of Cleveland Hospital. He received his medical degree in Punjab, India.

“Dr. Kang brings exceptional vision and energy to this role.  His commitment to the American Heart Association’s mission, combined with a clear passion for improving the well-being of our community, makes him an outstanding choice to lead this year’s Heart Ball,” said Francis D. Ferdinand, M.D., volunteer board chair of the American Heart Association Erie and director of Cardiac Surgery at the UPMC Hamot Heart & Vascular Institute.

The annual event is a night to celebrate year-round efforts to build a healthier Erie. Throughout the evening, the Heart Association will honor volunteers and patrons, share survivor stories and entertain guests with dinner, dancing and an auction.

“Erie Heart Ball is not merely a gala—it is a powerful platform to galvanize community support, elevate awareness and secure the critical resources needed to fund groundbreaking research, lifesaving education and future fellowships. Mobilizing our community is essential to achieving the Association’s goals and building a healthier future for the next generation,” Kang added.

The 2026 Erie Heart Ball will be held on Friday, June 5, 2026, at the Ambassador Banquet & Conference Center. The event is locally sponsored by LECOM Health and The Plastek Group.
