SEATTLE, March 6, 2025 — The American Heart Association today issued the following statement from Mary Ann Bauman, M.D., immediate past president, American Heart Association, Western States Region Board, in response to the failure to pass HB 1404 and SB 5352, which would have provided no-charge breakfast and lunch at public schools across Washington:
“During the pandemic, we kept hundreds of thousands of children in our state fed and ready to learn by providing school meals at no cost. Today, many kids are going hungry. The American Heart Association is disappointed that the Washington State Legislature failed to pass HB 1404 and SB 5352 which would have ensured equitable access to free school meals for all kids in Washington. One in eight children in Washington faces food insecurity. These bills would have fed kids and supported Washington families by providing financial relief and eliminating often confusing and difficult school meal enrollment procedures. We need to do better for Washington’s kids, families and school communities. Keeping kids fed is a proven way to support Washington’s families, one that unfortunately, will need to wait.”
