YERINGTON, NV SEPTEMBER 22, 2025 — Libraries have long served as vital community hubs, and a new collaboration between the American Heart Association and the Lyon County Library System is bringing an innovative health resource to residents: blood pressure cuffs available for checkout.
The initiative, part of the Libraries with Heart program, aims to make it easier for individuals to monitor their blood pressure at home. We aim to improve health outcomes by making blood pressure monitoring more accessible to the public and empowering more individuals in the region to make positive health changes. This effort is made possible through collaboration with the American Heart Association and American Stroke Association’s Getting to the Heart of Stroke™ initiative, is nationally supported by the HCA Healthcare Foundation. The Getting to the Heart of Stroke initiative is meeting people where they are, implementing evidence-based community health strategies in local health centers and community organizations.
Beginning September 15, blood pressure monitoring kits will be available at all Lyon County Library branches. Each kit includes:
- A blood pressure cuff (universal and XL sizes available)
- Easy-to-follow instructions
- A blood pressure log
- Educational materials on managing hypertension
“Blood pressure is a leading risk factor for heart disease, the number one cause of death in the U.S.,” said Nichole Monzon, Community Impact Director with the American Heart Association. “By offering these kits through local libraries, we’re empowering residents to take control of their health in a convenient and accessible way.”
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, nearly 1 in 4 adults in rural Nevada counties live with hypertension. Many are unaware of their condition due to the lack of symptoms, earning high blood pressure the nickname “the silent killer.”
“Libraries are more than just places to borrow books—they’re trusted community spaces where people can access resources that improve their lives,” said Wynne Prindle, Director of the Lyon County Library System. “We’re proud to support this initiative and help our residents take proactive steps toward better health.”
Residents who live, work, or attend school in Lyon County are eligible for a library card and can check out a blood pressure kit just like they would a book. To learn more, visit www.lyon-county.org/238/Library or contact your local branch.
